Struck to mark the accession of Syed Sirajuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia's constitutional monarch elected by the Conference of Rulers for a five-year term. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is unique among modern monarchies — the head of state is chosen by rotation among nine hereditary Malay rulers, making each accession a political negotiation as much as a ceremonial occasion.
Syed Sirajuddin was the Raja of Perlis, the smallest of Malaysia's royal states.
