Malaysia's first series of ringgit coinage was introduced following the currency split with Singapore and Brunei in 1967, when the three nations dissolved their shared monetary union and each began issuing independent currencies. The 1 Ringgit denomination was the workhorse of that inaugural series, intended to replace the Malaya and British Borneo dollar that had circulated across the region since colonial administration.
Abdul Halim of Kedah, the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, held the ceremonial role of head of state at the time of this issue. His reign as Agong ran 1965–1970.
