Maximilian of Bronkhorst exploited a technical loophole that plagued the early Dutch Republic for decades: the right of minor lordships to strike coin under imperial privilege, regardless of whether the output conformed to provincial standards. Batenburg's issues were notoriously irregular, and this klippe format — struck square rather than round — was almost certainly a deliberate choice to maximize silver content per blank while sidestepping die alignment scrutiny applied to round coinage.
The States General repeatedly petitioned to suppress these lordship mints. Batenburg was among the last to hold out.
