Batenburg was a tiny lordship on the Maas, and its coinage rights were legally dubious at the best of times. By 1618, Maximilian of Bronkhorst was exploiting the jurisdictional chaos of the early Dutch Republic to strike heavyweight silver well below the standards set by the States General — coins accepted in trade but technically illegal under successive placard ordinances attempting to regulate the flood of substandard rijksdaalders pouring from minor lordships and ecclesiastical mints across the eastern provinces.
The "Arendsrijksdaalder" designation distinguishes this type from the leeuwendaalder issues circulating simultaneously. Batenburg's mint was suppressed not long after.
