Kurantbanken — formally the Speciesbanken's successor and Denmark's first real note-issuing institution — operated under chronic stress from its founding in 1736. By the 1770s, the bank was already overextended, and the rigsdaler courant notes of this period circulated in an economy where confidence in paper was fragile at best. The backprint on white paper distinguishes this from the colored stock variants; whether the difference reflects a supply interruption or a deliberate production decision is not definitively established.
Christian VII's reign was effectively managed by others — first Johann Friedrich Struensee, then the Bernstorff-Guldberg faction — making royal association on circulating notes during this period largely ceremonial.
