World Jerusalem Day — Ruz-e Jahani-ye Qods — was declared by Ayatollah Khomeini in August 1979, designating the last Friday of Ramadan as an annual occasion for Muslim solidarity over the status of Jerusalem. This coin was struck within the first year of the Islamic Republic, when the new government was still building the iconographic vocabulary of the revolution and issuing commemorative coinage was a deliberate act of ideological positioning. Iran had severed diplomatic ties with Israel immediately upon the revolution's success in February 1979.
The brass-clad steel composition reflects early post-revolutionary cost pressures and raw material constraints that would deepen considerably once the Iraq-Iran War began in September 1980.
