| Obverse description | The national arms of the Yemen Arab Republic occupies the central field, depicting a spread eagle with wings displayed, its breast bearing a shield, and flanked by two crossed janbiya daggers. The Arabic legend reading 'الجمهورية العربية اليمنية' curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination '1R' and its Arabic equivalent 'ريال' appear in the lower field, flanked by the dual date '1969-١٩٦٩'. The legend 'YEMEN ARAB REPUBLIC' arcs along the lower periphery in Latin characters. The entire design is framed by a beaded border. |

Issued to honor Ahmad Muhammad al-Zubairi, poet and revolutionary executed in 1965 — almost certainly on the orders of royalist forces during the civil war that had consumed North Yemen since the 1962 coup. The commemorative came four years after his death, by which point the republican government had consolidated enough to memorialize its martyrs in silver.
It is one of only a handful of Yemeni commemoratives from this period struck in .925 silver, and mintages were low.
