The shield displays an open book bearing the Arabic word 'Iqra' (Read) at the top, flanked by an atom symbol and a wheat sheaf in the lower quarters, with the Omani national emblem at the base and the university's Arabic name inscribed on a scroll beneath. Surrounding the central device, the Arabic legend arcs across the upper field, while the Latin legends SULTAN QABOOS UNIVERSITY, SILVER JUBILEE, the founding year 1986, and the commemorative year 2011 are arranged around the lower periphery. |

Sultan Qaboos University opened in 1986 as Oman's first university, its founding directly tied to the sultan's post-1970 modernization drive that transformed the country from one of the most isolated states on earth — with fewer than ten kilometers of paved road at his accession — into a functioning modern state within a generation. This commemorative was issued for the institution's 25th anniversary.
