The Royal Opera House Muscat opened in October 2011 after more than a decade of construction, built on the direct orders of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who was himself an accomplished musician and studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before assuming power in 1970. Oman had no opera house tradition whatsoever — the project was a personal cultural ambition of the Sultan rather than a response to public demand.
The coin was issued in the same year as the opening, making it a direct commemorative of the inauguration rather than a retrospective issue.
