Issued to commemorate Mirbat Castle in Dhofar, a fort whose strategic position on the southern coast made it the site of one of the most significant — and least publicly acknowledged — battles of the Cold War era. In July 1972, a small SAS contingent alongside Sultan's Armed Forces soldiers repelled a sustained assault by PFLO guerrillas backed by South Yemen and Soviet support. The British government suppressed news of the engagement for years.
