The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the facial features and headwear. A circular Arabic legend surrounds the effigy, running along the upper and lower periphery of the coin, identifying the ruler and his title. The field surrounding the portrait is smooth and deeply mirrored, characteristic of proof striking. |

Issued as part of Oman's first commemorative series following Sultan Qaboos bin Said's 1970 coup against his father, Said bin Taimur. The elder Sultan had kept Oman in deliberate isolation — roads, schools, and banks were virtually nonexistent — and the new coinage program was part of a rapid modernization push that also included renaming the country itself from Muscat and Oman to simply the Sultanate of Oman.
The KM# 69.1 designation distinguishes this from the 69.2 variety, the difference lying in the arrangement of the Arabic text on the reverse edge inscription.
