Issued under Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who came to power in 1970 after deposing his own father in a palace coup backed by the British government. The Buraimi oasis itself had been the subject of a protracted territorial dispute between Oman, Abu Dhabi, and Saudi Arabia that was not fully resolved until 1974 — just three years before this series began striking. Choosing Buraimi Fort as a subject was a deliberate assertion of Omani sovereignty over a region that had been militarily contested within living memory.
