Barkat Al-Mauz castle sits at the mouth of Wadi Muaydin in the Hajar al-Gharbi mountains, and its selection for this issue reflects the Omani government's broader 1990s program of documenting pre-petroleum architectural heritage on commemorative coinage. The castle dates to the late seventeenth century and served as a seasonal residence for the Imams of Oman during the Yaruba dynasty — the same political lineage that expelled the Portuguese from Muscat in 1650.
