Bahla Fort, the subject of this issue, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 — the same year it was simultaneously placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to severe structural deterioration. A major restoration program funded by the Omani government ran through the 1990s and into the 2000s, making the 1995 striking date a direct acknowledgment of active conservation efforts rather than retrospective commemoration. The fort's mudbrick construction dates to the pre-Islamic period, though most surviving fabric reflects medieval Islamic rebuilding under the Banu Nabhan dynasty.
