Issued to mark the thirtieth anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession following the palace coup of July 23, 1970, in which he overthrew his own father, Said bin Taimur, with tacit British support. Said bin Taimur had kept Oman in deliberate isolation — banning radios, eyeglasses, and foreign travel — while sitting on substantial oil revenues. Qaboos reversed course immediately, using petroleum income to build roads, schools, and hospitals in a modernization campaign compressed into less than a decade.
The .925 fineness places this squarely in the British sterling tradition that influenced Gulf monetary practice well into the post-independence period.
