Issued to mark the 29th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession following the 1970 palace coup in which he deposed his own father, Said bin Taimur. The elder sultan had kept Oman in deliberate isolation — no schools, no roads, no hospitals — and Qaboos's modernization drive made these annual National Day commemoratives as much a statement of developmental progress as a calendrical formality. The .9167 fineness places this squarely in the 22-karat range used across the Gulf commemorative series of this period.
