Issued under the Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran from the late 1960s through the 1990s and enlisted central banks worldwide to mint commemorative pieces whose proceeds nominally supported agricultural development initiatives. Oman participated selectively in the program, making its FAO issues considerably less numerous than those of more prolific participants like Egypt or India.
The 1995 date places this at the tail end of FAO coin production globally, as institutional enthusiasm for the program had largely collapsed by the mid-1990s.
