Wehrmacht Reichskreditkassen notes are well-documented, but the Heeresausgaben — military payment scrip issued directly under Wehrmacht authority — occupy a distinct category. This 1 Reichspfennig piece belongs to the low-denomination Behelfszahlungsmittel series, intended to handle small transactions in occupied territories without releasing Reichsbank currency into local economies. The logic was deliberate: prevent German coinage from being hoarded or melted by occupied populations, while also limiting the economic footprint of the occupation itself.
Paper at this denomination was unusual. The tiny face value made production costs nearly equal to the note's worth.
