Additional information

The Schaaf 354/G 3 pattern predates the circulating Reichsmark series by two years and belongs to a documented group of trial strikings evaluated as the Nazi government consolidated control over monetary policy in 1933. Whether this specific composition was rejected on technical or political grounds is unresolved, but nickel was ultimately abandoned in favor of the aluminum-nickel alloy used in the issued series. Pattern survivals from this period are almost entirely traceable to former Reichsbank or Reichsmünzamt holdings.
