Camp scrip issued by the SS administration at Mauthausen served one function: to create a bureaucratic fiction of compensated labor while ensuring prisoners could spend nothing outside the camp's own canteen system. The currency was internal and self-contained by design — any earnings were effectively recycled back to the SS.
Mauthausen was classified as a Grade III camp, the harshest category in the Nazi system, reserved for prisoners deemed "incorrigible" and subject to Vernichtung durch Arbeit — annihilation through labor. The granite quarry at nearby Gusen was central to that policy. That scrip circulated in this specific place is what distinguishes it from the better-documented Dachau or Buchenwald issues.
Red paper distinguished the 1 Reichsmark denomination from lower values in the series.
