| Obverse description | Central device depicts a fruiting tree with spreading branches, rendered in relief within an inner beaded circle. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA surrounds the central device along the outer border. The denomination mark and mintmark letters appear in the lower field flanking the tree trunk. The date 1849 is inscribed in the lower portion of the legend, separated by pellets. The overall design reflects the host coin of Costa Rican issue, struck at the San Jose mint. |
