Honduras declared independence from the Central American Federation in 1838, and the Casa Nacional de la Moneda in Tegucigalpa faced the immediate problem of supplying a new sovereign state with usable coinage while silver supplies were unreliable. The billon solution — silver debased to roughly 20% fineness — was a practical stopgap, not a permanent policy. These provisional issues circulated alongside debased Spanish colonial fractionals that the public already distrusted.
The Tegucigalpa mint was chronically underfunded throughout this period, and output was irregular at best.
