Caracas issued this coin in the chaotic interlude of the First Venezuelan Republic, which lasted only from 1811 until mid-1812 — when Miranda surrendered to Monteverde and the republic collapsed entirely. The earthquake of March 26, 1812, which killed thousands and destroyed much of Caracas, is often cited as the material blow that broke the patriot cause that year; coinage from this window is consequently scarce simply because the issuing authority ceased to exist within months of production.
