Colombia's early republican coinage was minted under persistent logistical strain — the newly independent state inherited Spanish colonial mints at Bogotá and Popayán, both of which struggled with inconsistent silver supplies and workforce disruptions throughout the 1820s and 1830s. The .666 fineness was a deliberate step down from Spanish colonial standards, a practical concession to the fiscal pressures of a government simultaneously funding wars, administrative reorganization, and a fractious union with Venezuela and Ecuador under Gran Colombia.
Gran Colombia itself collapsed in 1831, yet the mints continued striking under essentially the same dies for years after, making precise dating within the Hernández 141–146 range meaningful for attribution to the pre- or post-dissolution period.
