Additional information

Rafael Carrera ruled Guatemala from 1844 until his death in 1865, making this coin something of a posthumous anomaly — it bears his name on issues dated after he was already dead. The coins continued under the brief presidency of Vicente Cerna, who retained Carrera's name on the coinage as a political gesture of continuity with the conservative order Carrera had spent decades enforcing.
