The Banco del Río de La Plata was a short-lived provincial institution operating out of Entre Ríos, and this 1868 issue is among the earliest locally printed banknotes produced within Argentina proper. Gualeguay, a minor river port in Entre Ríos, is an unusual place of printing — most Argentine provincial banks of the period contracted foreign firms, particularly in London or Paris, for their note production.
The denomination in "Reales Plata Boliviana" reflects the continued use of Bolivian silver coinage as a practical monetary reference across the Río de la Plata region well after Argentine independence, a monetary fragmentation that persisted through the 1870s.
