| Reverse description | Central field bears a bold Jerusalem cross with the royal monogram and mint details distributed across the four quadrants: the assayer initial E appears in one quarter, the mint mark P (for Potosí) in another, the denomination numeral I and the date (partially visible as 53, indicating 1653) in the remaining quarters. Below the cross, three wavy lines represent the waves, a traditional element of the Potosí coinage. The surrounding legend, partially struck on the irregular flan, reads the regnal and territorial titles of Philip IV in abbreviated Latin. The reverse exhibits the characteristically crude but bold relief of mid-seventeenth-century cob coinage from the Potosí mint. |
