| Obverse description | The entire field of this octagonal siege piece is occupied by a six-line Latin inscription struck in bold relief within a plain inner border with a granulated outer border running along the octagonal periphery. The legend reads PHIL IIII / REX / PATER / PATRIAE / ARIA OBS / 1641 . I ., identifying Philip IV as King and Father of the Fatherland, and recording the siege (obsidio) of Aire in 1641. The lettering is rendered in large, plain roman capitals, filling the available space in the characteristically utilitarian manner of emergency coinage. No figurative design is present; the inscription itself constitutes the entirety of the obverse composition. |
