Brazil's mint produced this issue two years ahead of the Games themselves, part of a broader commemorative circulation program the Banco Central do Brasil rolled out incrementally between 2014 and 2016. Releasing coins well before the event was a deliberate strategy — keeping collector and public interest sustained across multiple years rather than flooding the market in a single run.
Brazil had hosted the Pan American Games in Rio in 2007, but the 2016 Olympics marked the first time the Summer Games came to South America entirely.
