Brazil's mint produced a sprawling series of circulating commemoratives for the Rio 2016 Games, covering sports, athletes, and official mascots — an unusually ambitious program for a country whose economy was contracting sharply under the Rousseff administration, which was itself in the final stages of an impeachment process when these coins entered circulation. The mascot depicted here, Vinicius, was named after the poet and songwriter Vinícius de Moraes and was designed by the São Paulo studio Birdo.
