Obverse lettering IhnS ºLº IHNS DEI GRATIA REX PO (Many variations known)
Reverse description Central field bearing a cross pattée dividing the flan into four quadrants, each containing decorative elements typical of the hammered billon coinage of João I of Portugal. A circular legend in uncial Latin script encircles the design, invoking divine assistance in the customary medieval Iberian formula. The lettering, though subject to numerous orthographic and compositional variations across known specimens, follows the standard devotional text. The overall die work is consistent with the Lisbon mint production of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries.
