Córdoba's silver coinage of this period was struck under deeply unstable conditions — the province was effectively a autonomous state operating outside any unified Argentine monetary framework, with Buenos Aires and the interior locked in cycles of federalist conflict throughout the 1830s and 1840s. The 1840 issue falls squarely in the years when Governor Manuel López, a federalist ally of Rosas, controlled the province.
The CJ references distinguish two die varieties, suggesting more than one working pair was used during the year's production — not unusual for a provincial mint operating with limited tooling and inconsistent metal supply.
