Carlos II, the last Habsburg king of Spain, ruled under regencies for most of his minority and remained so physically and mentally incapacitated throughout his reign that effective monetary policy was largely managed by court factions rather than the crown itself. The milled coinage of his reign — produced on screw presses rather than by hammer — was introduced partly to combat the catastrophic macuquina forgery problem that had destabilized Castilian silver for decades.
