Struck to commemorate the proclamation of Fernando VII following the forced abdications at Bayonne in 1808, this piece belongs to a category of Spanish colonial loyalist coinage issued across the Americas as Napoleon installed his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne. The proclamation issues were not circulating currency in any conventional sense — they were ceremonial medals struck under municipal or provincial authority to publicly affirm allegiance to the captive Bourbon king, often distributed at official celebrations attended by local elites and clergy.
El Salvador was then part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, and issues attributed to this jurisdiction are among the rarer proclamation pieces from the region.
