The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each wound with a banner, representing the Strait of Gibraltar. The circular legend • HISPAN • ET IND • REX • reads around the upper periphery, while the mint mark NG, assayer initial M, and denomination 1R appear in the lower field flanking the pillars.
