Reverse description The crowned Royal Arms of Spain, displaying the quartered shield with castles and lions and the central escutcheon of the House of Bourbon, occupies the central field. The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each wound with a banner, representing the Strait of Gibraltar. The circular legend • HISPAN • ET IND • REX • reads around the upper periphery, while the mint mark NG, assayer initial M, and denomination 1R appear in the lower field flanking the pillars. A toothed milled border frames the entire design.
