Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Royal Arms of Castile and León, quartered shield bearing castles and lions, flanked on either side by the assayer initials J (later P). The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the royal legend running around the full periphery in Latin characters. The coin is of the macuquina-style pillar coinage transitional type, struck by milled technique at the Guatemala City mint.
