| Obverse description | Central quartered shield of Castile and Leon surmounted by a royal crown, displaying alternating castles and lions in the four quarters. The shield is flanked by two eagle supporters with spread wings, a heraldic device associated with the Catholic Monarchs. A beaded inner circle encloses the central device, with the peripheral legend reading FERNANDVS ET HELIABET in Gothic lettering. The mint mark and assayer's initial appear in the lower field. The overall composition reflects the late Gothic heraldic style characteristic of the Castilian hammered coinage of Ferdinand and Isabella. |
