Obverse description Royal coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella displayed within a beaded inner circle, featuring the quartered arms of Castile and León with the Granada addition at base. The shield is elaborately rendered in the late Gothic style characteristic of the hammered coinage reform of 1497. A Latin legend encircles the design between the beaded circle and the outer rim. Although the coin type was continued under Charles V and Philip II, the obverse retains the names and titles of Ferdinand and Isabella.
