Felipe V abdicated in January 1724 in favor of his son Luis I, then reclaimed the throne seven months later when Luis died of smallpox — meaning coins struck at Madrid during the 1720s exist under two monarchs within a single year. The Madrid mint during this period was notoriously inconsistent in its silver fineness, and assayer changes through the 1720s and 1730s are traceable through the assayer initials struck on each piece.
Cal#1529 covers a broad date range, but collectors working the series distinguish issues by assayer letter rather than year alone.
