The 1 Real of Felipe V represents the tail end of the old macuquina (cob) tradition in Mexico, struck during the transitional decade when the crown was forcing milled coinage onto the colonial mints. Madrid's 1728 decree mandated the switch to mechanically struck, round planchets — and Mexico City complied by 1732, making these among the earliest machine-struck issues from that mint. The cob series ran in parallel briefly, creating overlap that still confuses attribution.
Felipe V himself never saw the full transition complete; he died in 1746, one year before this type's production ceased.
