Obverse description Central device features the crowned Royal Arms of Spain — a quartered shield displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León, with a pomegranate at base — set within an ornate cartouche. The denomination numeral '1' appears to the left of the shield and the assayer's initial 'R' to the right, both flanking the central arms. A large royal crown surmounts the shield. The encircling legend reads in abbreviated Latin, identifying Philip V as King of Spain and the Indies. The coin exhibits the characteristic milled border of the early Mexican macuquina-to-columnario transitional pillar coinage.
