Felipe V spent much of his early reign fighting the War of Spanish Succession, which stretched Castilian finances to their limits and put enormous pressure on American mints to produce silver at volume. The Mexico City mint during this period was operating under the assayer pair whose initials appear on these cobs — J and J, for Juan Serrano and José Eustaquio de León — a transition interval that makes precise attribution within the 1715–1718 window genuinely difficult.
These macuquina pieces were struck by hammer on irregularly cut planchets, so centering is nearly always off. The 1715 Plate Fleet disaster, which scattered thousands of Spanish silver coins along the Florida coast, included reales of exactly this type.
