Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León, showing alternating castles and lions within a shield, surmounted by a small escutcheon of Granada at the base. The shield is flanked by the Pillars of Hercules to either side, each pillar bearing a partial legend. The overall design is characteristic of the cob (macuquina) coinage style, struck on an irregular planchet with flat, uneven surfaces typical of hand-hammered production. The partial legend PHILIPPVS III D G is distributed around the shield, though often partially visible due to the irregular flan. Strike and die alignment vary considerably, as is standard for this series.
