Obverse lettering PHILIPPVS II DEI GRATIA
(Translation: Felipe 2nd by the grace of God)
Reverse description A plain Jerusalem cross (cross potent) divides the field into four quarters, each alternately charged with the castles of Castile and the lions of León, following the standard typology of the Colonial Spanish cob coinage. The design is struck on an irregular planchet characteristic of hammered macuquina production. The border carries the encircling legend HISPANIARVM ET INDIARVM REX. The overall design is bold though unevenly struck, consistent with the hand-hammered technique of the period.
