Obverse lettering CAROLVS TERTIVS
Reverse description Two crowned Pillars of Hercules flanking a central field divided by a bold cross, with the denomination numeral I and the motto PLVS VLTRA distributed between the pillars, and the date appearing in the lower portion of the divided field. The design is struck on an irregularly clipped cob planchet, resulting in partial visibility of the peripheral elements. The cross divides the field into four quarters, a hallmark of Spanish colonial macuquina coinage from the Potosí mint. The relief is bold where the strike is centered, with the characteristic roughness and flan irregularity of hammered colonial cob production.
