| Reverse description | Crowned hemispheres flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, each pillar surmounted by a crown and entwined with a banner bearing the motto PLUS ULTRA, representing Spain's claim to the New World. The mint mark 'P' for Potosí, the assayer's initial, and the denomination numeral '1' appear in the field, along with the last two digits of the year of issue. The design is struck on an irregular, roughly clipped planchet in the macuquina tradition, with the central devices generally well-impressed while peripheral legends are partially off the flan. The date '98' (for 1698) is visible in the lower central field of this example. |
