Proclamation coins were not currency — they were distributed by officials to crowds during the public ceremony announcing a new monarch, a ritual that blended political theater with calculated largesse. Carlos IV's accession proclamations in New Spain were held in late 1789 and into 1790, months after the king had already assumed the throne in Madrid following the death of his father Carlos III in December 1788. The delay was purely logistical: news crossed the Atlantic slowly, and organizing the ceremony in Mexico City required time.
