Carlos III's monetary reforms of the 1770s standardized silver fineness across the Spanish colonial mints, but Mexico City's output during this window reflects a transitional phase in assay accountability — the inclusion of the assayer's initial pairing on these pieces was partly a response to documented fraud cases at provincial mints earlier in the century. Mexico City remained the highest-volume colonial mint in the world during this period, producing more silver coinage annually than all European mints combined.
