Carlos III's Guatemalan reales of this period were struck at the Santiago de los Caballeros mint — the same facility that would be catastrophically damaged by the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773, an event that ultimately forced relocation of the colonial capital entirely. Production in the years immediately preceding the earthquakes was already inconsistent, with assayer changes and supply disruptions from the Peruvian silver trade creating noticeable variation across the run.
KM#24 is a cob-style macuquina issue, hand-struck on irregularly cut planchets. Uniform examples are the exception.
